V Festival Tours Australia; Richard Branson Not Worried about Losing Money

The Australian V Festival has been losing money ever since its induction to the fest circuit last year, but apparently that is not going to stop UK billionaire businessman, and indie rock fan, Richard Branson, from pumping money into the venture anyways.

The second annual V Festival in Australia kicked off in Sydney's Centennial Park last weekend, falling 2,000 ticket sales short of the 35,000 goal, Branson told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"We've now gotten bigger this year - we're gonna lose an even bigger packet but everyone's going to have a great time.

"In a number of years I suspect we'll break even and maybe make a bit of money, but it's a really good thing for Virgin to do."

The V2 Festival on to the wet and muddy Gold Coast show, which delayed the festival opening and made for plenty of muddy fun time.

Next stops for the Australia V Festival include this weekend's shows in Melbourne (April 5) and Perth (April 6).

Headlining V Fest Australia bands include The Smashing Pumpkins, Air, Queens of the Stone Age, Duran, Duran, The Presets, Modest Mouse, CSS, Hot Hot Chip, Cut Copy, The Rakes, Jesus and the Mary Chain and nearly a dozen other artists and bands slated to perform at some point or another during the four-city stop festival.

Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek and Red House Painters Will Tour to Promote New Album

In support of his new album April due out next month, Mark Kozelek will be touring the U.S. and Canada over the next few months with and without Red House Painters and others who contributed to the album.

Dot To Dot Festival 2008 Lineup Includes Spirtualized, Dan Deacon and The Little Ones

The 2008 Dot to Dot Festival in Nottingham, London and Bristol includes some three dozen indie rock artists and bands, many of which I must admit I have never heard of.

Some of the bands in the Dot lineup that are familiar include Spiritualized, The Little Ones, We Are Wolves, Dan Deacon (pictured above), 1990s, Caribou, but many others are not, which drives me crazy because I feel obligated to check them all out (guarantee there are great songs hidden in the virtually 'unknown' indie groups).

Denver Rocks: Built to Spill and Meat Puppets at Gothic Theathre in Englewood Tonight

For many years, Denver was not one of the major cities "on the map" for concerts by mainstream and indie rock bands.

But during the past decade, times have changed. Not only does the city host the annual Monolith Festival (see last year's line-up, videos and more), but there are more venues for indie artists - both homegrown and from everywhere else.

If you're a Denver-area indie, alternative and rock fan, here's a sampling of some selected shows in Denver through March 2008.

Editors Premeir New Single at Warfield in San Francisco

The sting of kicking yourself in the ass is different than if someone else does it for you. It hurts more and last longer, especially after missing a concert from one of your favorite UK bands. premiered

So in one sense, thank goodness for YouTube; at least anyone can see parts of a concert they missed - which would have never been possible five years ago.

On Feb. 8th the UK 'goth rockers' Editors played at the Warfield in San Francisco to a sold out crowd. Not only do I love going to the Warfield, but the band was debuting new material that they hadn't played at their last San Francisco gig last September.

Here's a clip from the show of the Editors playing their yet-to-be-released single "Push Your Head Towards The Air" :

View the official music video set to be released as the band's next single in the U.K. on March 3. It's an interesting new approach to most of their previous work, relying heavily on the piano keys and voice of , stripped away from the hard-driving, escalating chord progressions and Interpol-like gothic percussions.

The band opened the show with "Camera," surprising some fans who didn't think they would play it all. Here's the band playing one of the last songs of the night, "Lights":

REM, Iron Maiden, The Killers Announced for Budapest's Week-Long Sziget Festival 2008

Hungary may be known more for its traditional dancing and music than a major summer rock festival, but that tell that to the thousands of Europeans who flock to Budapest' Sziget Festival each year. This year's festival dates are set for August 11-16, 2008.

The outdoor camping festival is held on Obudai Island on the Danube River. This year's fest kicks off with a concert from old-timer metal heads Iron Maiden followed by artists such as The Killers, REM, Nine Inch Nails, Gogol Bordello and many others. The 100€ festival tickets (see details and order online before they sell out) include a week's camping (beginning on August 11). An estimated 50,000 fans will attend and camp on the island during the week-long festival. Now damn, that sounds like fun. Nevertheless, according to festival organizers, this will be the last year that Sziget is going to be held for six days.

A mayor in a neighboring district has filed a lawsuit against the organizers claiming that the event causes a significant disturbance to residents in the area (you damn party poopers! - look at the money it brings in to your community).

Cat Power's First 2008 Tour Hits the Northeastern U.S., Canada and Australia

Following the Jan. 28 release of her new album titled Jukebox Cat Power (aka, Chan Marshall) and her back-up band The Dirty Delta Blues Band hit the road.

Marshall launched her first tour of 2008 on February 7 at Boston’s Orpheum Theatre (venue info – venue review – YouTube video from the show below).

Hello Beautiful Tours Ontario Cities after IndieWeek Nod

The poppy indie outfit Hello Beautiful launched out of Ottawa last year with plenty of local fanfare.

Readers of the Canadian indie blog IndieWeek nominated the band as the best of the year for 2007.

Not to be stopped, Hello Beautiful is currently on tour, with more dates expected to be released later in early spring.

Glastonbury Dates Set, But Line-Up of Artists is Not

While the line-up for Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (aka, Coachella) set for this April already confirmed, other big festivals, are still only the topic of rumors about which artists may or may not play.

The famous Glastonbury Festival in Pliton, England has scheduled the dates for 2008's fest, set for June 27-29.

However, there only a handful of confirmed artists - among what is usually more than 100 performers - playing the festival for 2008. Come on, get going lads! People need to make plans. Coachella Line-up and Other Festival and Concert News in U.S. and Abroad

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival announced the line-up for this year's event in Indio, California on Monday to a less-than-enthused reaction from the online music community.

Roger Waters, a rock icon and founding father of the legendary rock band Pink Floyd is great and all, but for many of the festival goers under 30, it's not quite the closing show they expected from what quickly became one of the most popular festivals in the states.

Since it's first festival right after the dotcom bubble busted in April 2000, the fest has established itself as an event at which to expect ground-breaking bands - like Radiohead, Bjork, etc.

But with a failing economy and the fact that Coachella 2008 doesn't really have any 'really awesome' headliners, it's very likely that many will skip it this year, especially when there are so many other festivals to choose from nowadays.

Additionally, Coachella has been widely criticized for it's ticket and camping prices in an area where hotel rooms go for an average of $250 a night if you can't get camping tickets. In addition, Coachella is one of the most costly festivals - $90 a day, or a whopping deal of $269 for a three-day pass.

Arctic Monkeys Launch Christmas Concert Tour In U.K. to End Blockbuster Year

Arctic Monkeys, riding high of the success of their latest album Favourite Worst Nightmare, and the latest single Teddy Picker, are set to kick-off a 11-day, seven show tour of the U.K. and the Netherlands.
Tickets for all seven of the Arctic Monkeys' shows scheduled from Dec. 6 to Dec. 15 sold out in hours after they went on sale last month.

The super-hot indie rock-pop band shows no sign of cooling down for the winter, even after an extensive concert tour of North America and Europe in 2007, not to numerous, memorable appearances at indie rock music festivals around the world.

Add to that a successful new album, popular YouTube and MySpace music videos and a nearly endless stream of worldwide press coverage.

The tour will kick-off with an opening show in Amsterdam this Thursday, December 6 at the HMH and end with two shows on Dec. 14 and Dec. 15 at the AECC in Aberdeen, Scotland.

The Stereophonics Kick-Off Fall Tour with Release of Pull The Pin

The Stereophonics, back from a more than two-year hiatus, will kick-off their one-month, 21-show fall 2007 "Pull The Pin" tour of the U.K. on October 29 with a show at Lincoln's legendary Engine Shed.

The success of The Stereophonics hit single "It Means Nothing" from this summer's Monday Bank Holiday EP has attracted new fans - thanks to the Internet and radio - and restored the faith of many loyal fans who have been following the band since their 1996 debut on V2 Records.

If you're in the U.K., get your tickets soon; word is they are selling fast.

Editors Wrap Up Successful U.S. Tour; Launch European Tour on Heels of Hit Singles

In the U.S., fans of the neo-post goth rockers Editors are still reeling from the band's successful 2007 summer tour and the release of the critically-acclaimed CD An End Has a Start.

On the last leg of the Editors' extensive North American tour, the band did not show the wear and tear that months on the road playing gigs, doing interviews, attending functions, etc. can do to a band.

In fact, they were in top form during their sold out show on September 20, 2007 at the historic Fillmore in San Francisco. No wonder they have been so quickly dubbed one of the best bands to ever come out of the U.K. Hopefully, they'll catch on in the U.S. but Editors' fan base is by no question much bigger in the U.K. and Europe.

After their blazing San Francisco gig, the band rested up in the city for the weekend before heading off to Los Angeles for their final show in the U.S.

But the break was brief, especially considering the band has been on tour almost constantly since their huge splash on to the music scene in the U.K. in 2005.

Editors kicked-off their third concert tour of shows for the year last week at The Academy in Bristol.

If you get the chance, see Editors live; they love and expound energy with a mix of goth-like darkness and melancholy. The musical line up for the Carling-Reading Festival is jam packed with more than 100 of the best independent and alternative artists performing on five stages: Klaxons, Kings of Leon, Razorlight, The Smashing Pumpkins (or Billy Corgan and Friends), Hellogoodbye, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Jimmy Eat World, Ash, The Sounds, Sparta, We Are Scientists, The Shins, Panic at the Disco, Hold Steady, Dinosaur Jr., Fall Out Boy, NiN, The Used, Billy Talent, Cold War Kids, CSS, LCD Soundsystem, The Sunshine Underground, Bloc Party, New Found Glory, Peter, Bjorn and John, Tokyo Police Club, Plain White T's, Andrew Bird, Jason Rouse, Shiny Toy Guns, Silversun Pickups and amazingly enough, much, much more.

T On The Fringe (TOTF)

Edinburgh, Scotland - August 21 - 24

The "T on the Fringe" Festival, held from August 21-24, in Edinburgh, Scotland at Meadowbank Stadium, featured more than 40 artists from the mainstream music scene to the indie "underground" highlighting genres like rock, pop hiphop, jazz and R&B.

Festival goers were treated to a four-day festival and rocked out to an amazing line up of "mainstream" alternative rock icons and indie groups including the Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails, Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight, Interpol, Silverchair, James, Kayne West, Dinosaur Jr., Happy Mondays and many more. This year's Lollapalooza Music Festival in Chicago's Grant Park is well underway with performances by dozens of artists on half a dozen stages.

Tens of thousands of music fans are braving the blistering Chicago heat to see and hear popular and more underground music artists that reads like a who's who of alternative, indie and some mainstream music featuring artists like Interpol, MIA, Tokyo Police Club, The Fratellis, Blonde Redhead, LCD Soundsystem, The Black Keys, Daft Punk, The Hold Steady, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Spoon, Regina Spektor, Snow Patrol, Muse, Blue October, Paolo Nutini, !!!, Yo La Tengo, Peter Bjorn and John, Annuals, TV on the Radio, Modest Mouse, My Morning Jacket and closing the festival on Sunday night - Pearl Jam.

With a line-up like that - and there is much more as well (see the entire, three-day schedule) - any indie rock and pop fan would be practically in music heaven. However, the problem is many of the most popular indie and mainstream rock artists are playing at the same time on different stages. Yet the organizers have to schedule the way they need to fit some 100 artists into three days on nine - yes nine - stages.

So, for example, if you're at the festival and you want to see Snow Patrol or Yeah Yeah Yeahs, you have to choose because they are playing at the same time on different stages. That's a hard choice for an indie rock fan that likes both bands. The same is the case for Interpol and Muse; The Roots and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah; Pete Yorn and Tapes 'n Tapes; My Morning Jacket and Modest Mouse and so on.

The webcast for the festival offers limited access and a line-up of artists that will be broadcast. Of course, part of the reason is that certain stages will shut down for an hour to break down the previous acts equipment and set-up the next acts.

Therefore, to provide a consent streaming livecast, the organizers of Lollapalooza chose to broadcast a selection of artists, missing many of the best artists' performance.

You'd think they'd want to broadcast the best rock and indie rock artists and groups. Come on, M.I.A.? Not sure where sucky hip hop fits in with the overall theme of the event, but whatever.

Anyways, the webcast is on now until Sunday night (August 5) when Pearl Jam will close the three-day festival.

The Smashing Pumpkins Reunion Tour Expands to Include More Shows in North America

The trend-setting rock icons The Smashing Pumpkins are in the midst of a string of shows at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore Theatre and a surprise performance in downtown Santa Cruz on Friday, July 20.

The schedule below is the most up-to-date concert tour schedule for the Smashing Pumpkins Reunion Tour 2007.

The rocking trio will also be headlining the Virgin Festival in Baltimore next month before heading off to Europe and then back to North America for a tour that will last until the end of October (unless more shows are added).

The Fratellis Launch Three-Month World Tour On Heels of Brit Award Success

The Fratellis have extended their three-month worldwide tour and will be opening for The Police next week in Philadelphia and again next month at Giants Stadium in New Jersey.

Later in August, the Fratellis will play a number of shows at Japan's Summer Sonic Festival and the UK's VFestival.
